About Portland Oregon Weightlifting (P.O.W.)

Our primary goal is to provide a safe and fun environment where young athletes and adults can learn about the importance of fitness.  We offer multiple types of training programs, which consists of sports-specific, competition, or recreational training regimens.  The programs are divided into group training, team training, or one-on-one training settings, each of which are designed to take you to the next level.  We want to increase exposure and knowledge of Olympic style weightlifting and its benefits correlated with sports training and overall fitness.  We are also working to expand and promote USA Weightlifting and its pool of athletes.  Most major college and professional sports programs today use one or more forms of the Olympic lifts in training.  This exposure can greatly benefit youth and high school athletes in performing at their highest level.

Why Should You Train Using Olympic Weightlifting Movements?

Olympic weightlifting trains your body to use its muscles in a continuous motion, comparing it to movements such as running or jumping.  This increase in your athletic ability is why the Olympic snatch and clean & jerk are superior in sports training.  Standard lifts by themselves only teach the body and its muscles to do isolated movements to strengthen a certain area and then stop.  (Question:  Do you want your muscles to be trained to stop in the middle of a jump, step, catch, or swing?)  In this way, your brain has to fight your training to make your body's muscles work together, slowing you down.  Olympic lifting also increases fast twitch muscle fiber recruitment.  Traditional lifting makes you stronger, but requires additional training to teach the strength you have developed to become explosive and quick.
